Subsurface Infiltration Trench
A Subsurface Infiltration Trench is a linear infiltration structure similar to a typical infiltration bed under parking or vegetation. Infiltration trenches are suitable in tight locations where space is limited or along sloped areas where they can be installed in series down a hillside.

Trenches may have a variety of surface covers including pervious or traditional asphalt, concrete, paver blocks, soil with vegetation (including woodlands), aggregate, and sand. Permeable covers, including pervious pavements, soil, aggregate and vegetation, are advantageous because they offer additional pretreatment and a distributed inflow into the infiltration regime.

An Infiltration Trench offers an affordable mechanism for the retrofit of existing traditional detention basins.

At the Pennsylvania State University/Centre County Visitor Center, roof leaders distribute stormwater into a shallow Subsurface Infiltration Trench.
