Fort Necessity National Battlefield is an 852-acre facility managed by the National Park Service to commemorate George Washington's 1754 Battle of Fort Necessity. The new interpretive/education center at Fort Necessity tells the story of Fort Necessity, the National Road, and the resources in the vicinity of the Park.
Cahill Associates worked closely with the NPS and the design team members to integrate sustainable site design through every element of this project, from on-site water supply with low-flow fixtures to a wetlands wastewater treatment system. In lieu of a standard detention basin for stormwater management, CA designed a stone stormwater storage/groundwater recharge bed beneath the parking bays. Additional site disturbance was kept to a minimum by locating new structures, such as the wetlands wastewater treatment system, in previously disturbed areas. For wastewater, CA designed a subsurface flow wetland treatment system with reuse of the treated water as gray water to flush toilets. Any excess water is applied in a nearby-undisturbed woodland. Cahill Associates developed and submitted the stormwater design as described here, though final construction may vary according to the National Park Service development program. |
